Working Both Sides of the Connectivity Puzzle
Exploring Networks and Devices: Both non-profit organizations bring industry leaders together to understand and shape technology for the home. Some major corporations are members of both organizations: HP, Microsoft, Alcatel-Lucent, and Cisco are examples. While DLNA is primarily creating standards for inter-connectivity of CE devices for content and entertainment discovery and sharing, CABA is looking at a wider range of topics involving not only connectivity, but home energy controllers and building infrastructure. Having fast networks without a large pool of connected devices only solves half the problem. And having two incompatible networks in a home will further confuse consumers.
New Research Project Launched: In a recent press release, the CABA announced its new research project ‘It’s the Magic Thing’ ( OK, so it’s not a very techie name) to evaluate future connected home technology and connectivity solutions that enhance quality of life.
Carol Priefert, senior manager at Whirlpool Corporation and Past-Chair of CABA’s Connected Home Research Council explained, “The study will determine what consumers want instead of what technology can do, and will then map out what future home technologies will look like in 10 to 15 years.”
Opportunity to “Connect”: In 2006, CABA integrated the Internet Home Alliance, an association of technology companies committed to research and development within the intelligent home sector. The working group now exists as CABA’s Connected Home Research Council.
On September 9, 2009 the CABA will be presenting the Connected Home Research Council Family Ecosystem Forum to “bring together leading companies dealing with integration of consumer electronics and other cutting-edge technology throughout the home.” Perhaps Member Companies of both organizations should make a point of meeting at this upcoming event. In other words, send your CABA representative AND your DLNA expert so they can exchange ideas.
